TUDCA is a conjugated bile salt that is important for bile synthesis and reducing fat accumulation in the liver. It also reduces endoplasmic reticulum stress, thereby supporting cellular function in nervous tissue and other organ systems. 75 mg of choline per capsule, as a highly bioavailable choline bitartrate salt, provides a relatively high amount of elemental choline to support neurological function, cognition, and liver health through the production of phosphatidylcholine, bile, acetylcholine, and betaine. Bile salts are one of the main components of bile, a fluid essential for digesting fats, absorbing fat-soluble vitamins, eliminating waste, and forming hormones. Bile and bile salts are produced by the liver and stored in the gallbladder between meals. A bile salt deficiency can cause poorly digested fats to pass through the digestive tract, causing flatulence, cramps, loose stools, and, ultimately, an increased risk of gallstone formation. Tauroursodeoxycholic acid, more commonly known as TUDCA, is a conjugated bile salt that may contribute to gallbladder and liver health. Specifically, TUDCA has been shown to be a safe and effective support for patients with primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), a chronic autoimmune disease that causes bile to build up in the liver, and it may protect the liver from damage caused by liver cirrhosis due to long-term alcohol consumption. Mechanistically, TUDCA also provides cellular protection by better regulating apoptosis. One of the most important applications of TUDCA's cellular protective role is in the field of neurological health. Animal studies have shown that TUDCA serves as a neuroprotectant against acute injuries such as stroke, as well as chronic neurodegenerative diseases.
