Magnesium and the Brain: The Threonate Difference
Magnesium is one of the most important minerals for human physiology, serving as a cofactor in over 300 enzymatic reactions. According to the 2004 Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS), over 45% of the population did not meet the Estimated Average Requirement (EAR) for magnesium. The EAR is the average intake needed to meet the body's needs for 50% of healthy people, as some health conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and osteoporosis require even higher magnesium intakes to meet body needs.
One factor explaining why more than half of the Canadian population does not meet their magnesium needs is the significant 80 to 90% decline in the magnesium content of products compared to what it was 100 years ago. In addition, aging, certain health conditions, medications, exercise, and diets high in soft drinks, caffeine, alcohol, sodium, calcium, and excessive protein can negatively impact magnesium status.
Poor magnesium status is associated with several health problems, such as occasional headaches, poor cognition, poor concentration, low mood, nervousness, suboptimal blood pressure, and impaired insulin response.
Magnesium status is challenging to assess due to its tight regulation in the blood. Adequate magnesium levels are essential for brain health and function. Its most important functions include protecting the integrity of the blood-brain barrier (BBB), acting as a cofactor for neurotransmitter synthesis, and modulating receptors. Magnesium transport in the brain is normally a restricted process due to the tight regulation of magnesium in the blood. In 2010, researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology published their new discovery of magnesium L-threonate, the only magnesium complex shown to specifically increase brain magnesium levels.
