Free radicals cause biological damage, typically through oxidative processes. SOD is the primary free radical scavenger enzyme in humans. It converts superoxide radicals into hydrogen peroxide and oxygen. Similarly, catalase converts hydrogen peroxide into oxygen and water, thus complementing the activity of SOD. These activities are a crucial component of the cellular antioxidant defense mechanism, and by virtue of this function, these compounds play a role in moderating the aging process.
