Supports cardiovascular function.
Taurine is a sulfur-containing amino acid that plays many roles in promoting health. Dietary sources of taurine include meat and seafood, particularly shellfish such as mussels, clams, and oysters. Those who do not regularly consume these foods, especially vegetarians, may be at risk of taurine deficiency. The scientific community has yet to reach a consensus on whether humans produce enough taurine through their own metabolism to meet their needs. Furthermore, high homocysteine levels are a sign that the body may be having difficulty producing taurine. Since taurine is essential for cardiac and immune function, as well as glucose metabolism and nervous system health, low taurine levels should be treated with dietary changes and/or supplementation.
