Selenium protects normal cellular function by scavenging harmful free radicals. It is a natural antioxidant that reduces oxidative stress and delays the oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids as a component of selenoprotein P and selenoenzymes such as glutathione peroxidase. The highest concentrations of selenium are found in the thyroid gland, where it scavenges reactive oxygen species produced during thyroid hormone synthesis. It also plays a direct role in thyroid hormone synthesis. Additionally, selenium protects immune cells from the excessive production of reactive oxygen species that can occur during normal immune responses. Pure Encapsulation Selenium contains selenomethionine, a bioavailable organic form of selenium.
