Prenatal multivitamins are different from regular multivitamins. Their formula is specially designed to prepare your body for pregnancy and meet the nutritional needs of both mother and fetus. They contain more folic acid to help prevent spina bifida (a spinal malformation) and anencephaly (a brain and skull abnormality) that can occur early in pregnancy when the neural tube and spine do not fuse properly.
Prenatal vitamins also typically contain more iron than regular multivitamins. Iron promotes fetal growth and development and helps prevent anemia, a condition characterized by a lack of healthy red blood cells. Some studies also suggest that prenatal vitamins reduce the risk of low birth weight.
Pregnant or breastfeeding women (19 years and over): Take 2 capsules, 2 times per day. Take with meals, a few hours before or after taking other medications or natural health products. 400 mcg of folate per day is enough for most women (to reduce the risk of neural tube defects). Consult a health care practitioner to determine if additional folate intake would be beneficial for you before taking this product.
