How do postbiotics work?
The immune system relies on compounds produced by beneficial microbiota bacteria to regulate the immune response. Postbiotics contain these same bioactive compounds that help activate the immune response, even when the microbiota is unbalanced.
Like prebiotics, postbiotics nourish beneficial bacteria. Unlike prebiotics, whose fibers must be broken down before consumption, postbiotics contain pre-processed nutrients (such as butyric acid and other short-chain fatty acids) that are directly usable energy sources for intestinal bacteria.
Communication within the gut
Intestinal bacteria have complex social relationships. This phenomenon, called quorum sensing, allows strains to communicate through signaling proteins, which help them coordinate their beneficial activities, such as preventing the colonization of the gut by pathogenic bacteria. Taking postbiotics provides additional signaling proteins that promote better coordination of intestinal bacteria.
