Niacin, also known as vitamin B3 or nicotinic acid, is recognized as a cardioprotective agent, primarily due to its action in inhibiting triglyceride hydrolysis, leading to both an increase in HDL and a decrease in triglyceride levels. In fact, niacin has been linked to an increase in HDL by up to 30%. In the body, its primary function is as a component of the coenzymes NAD+ and NADP+, both of which function in the cell's redox state. In addition to these actions, it has also been shown to inhibit vascular inflammation by decreasing the production of endothelial reactive oxygen species (ROS) and subsequent LDL oxidation, as well as by reducing the production of inflammatory cytokines.
