Antioxidant activity
NAC is a powerful antioxidant. It acts directly as a free radical scavenger, particularly oxygen radicals. NAC is a precursor to L-cysteine, which leads to increased glutathione biosynthesis. Glutathione is not well absorbed by the body when taken orally. Studies have shown that oral glutathione absorption is limited, making it difficult to maintain adequate glutathione levels. NAC supplementation has been shown to significantly increase circulating glutathione levels in the body. Increasing glutathione levels, in turn, increases the production of specialized antioxidant enzymes, such as glutathione peroxidase and glutathione reductase. Through the activity of these enzymes, NAC protects the body from oxidative stress.
Chronic bronchitis
NAC has effective mucolytic and anti-inflammatory properties, helping to restore cellular balance by reducing inflammation in chronic respiratory conditions through the inhibition of pathways that trigger oxidative stress and pro-inflammatory gene activity.
