MSM provides a supplemental source of methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), a sulfur-containing organic compound. Sulfur is a necessary element in the production of collagen, the main constituent of cartilage and connective tissue. It is also important in the formation of body proteins through the formation of disulfide bonds, which hold tissues together. Intracellular sulfhydryl groups are also required for the catalytic function of many enzymes. As a source of sulfur, MSM plays an important role in carbohydrate metabolism and in the maintenance of healthy hair, skin, and nails. It has also been shown to have antioxidant properties. Since dietary intake of sulfur-containing compounds, such as methionine and cysteine, is generally inadequate, MSM can serve as an excellent supplemental source of sulfur. MSM is available in capsules or powder form. Each capsule provides 830 mg of MSM.
