Melatonin is a hormone produced by the pineal gland that regulates the body's sleep/wake cycle. Melatonin's primary role is to regulate the body's circadian rhythm, endocrine secretions, and sleep phases. Studies show that it facilitates falling asleep and improves sleep quality. Research has shown that melatonin supplementation helps reset the body's sleep-wake cycle, a component of the circadian rhythm. It may reduce the time it takes to fall asleep (sleep onset latency) in people with delayed sleep phase syndrome, characterized by difficulty falling asleep at the desired or conventional times.
