Liquid iodine provides 75 mcg of iodine (as potassium iodide) per drop. Iodine is an essential trace mineral and is vital for healthy thyroid function. Approximately 80% of dietary iodine is sequestered by the thyroid gland. However, other tissues also concentrate iodine, including the salivary glands, gastric mucosa, choroid plexus, mammary gland, and ovaries. Decreased iodine status can lead to insufficient thyroxine production, negatively impacting thyroid function. Vegetarians may be at increased risk of iodine deficiency.
