L-arginine may contribute to a slight improvement in exercise capacity in people with stable cardiovascular disease (CVD).
L-arginine is a non-essential amino acid involved in protein synthesis. However, it may become conditionally essential in certain situations — such as illness, stress, or the recovery phase — where the body's needs may exceed its production capacity.
It is more readily absorbed as a free amino acid than when obtained from dietary protein.
L-arginine is used by an enzyme, nitric oxide synthase, to support the production of nitric oxide.
Nitric oxide helps improve blood circulation, which supports better exercise capacity in people with stable CVD.
Studies have shown that L-arginine helps the body use oxygen efficiently, supports energy levels, promotes recovery after exercise, and increases physical endurance.
