Krill Oil is a blend of omega-3 fatty acids and astaxanthin that helps maintain good health. The EPA and DHA in krill oil are primarily bound to phospholipids, which may increase their bioavailability compared to some forms of fish oil supplements, due to better intestinal transport. Krill naturally contains astaxanthin, a carotenoid antioxidant responsible for its red pigmentation. Supplementing with 1 g of krill oil (providing 200 mg of EPA and DHA) for 12 weeks improved overall health compared to placebo in a randomized trial of 267 adults with borderline or elevated triglycerides. Recent research suggests that krill oil's unique combination of omega-3 fatty acids, phospholipids, and astaxanthin is a good alternative to fish oil.
