The majority of urinary tract infections (UTIs) are caused by E. coli, a bacterium that binds to D-mannose residues found on receptors on urinary tract cells. Supplementing with D-mannose, a sugar residue, provides another binding site for the bacteria, which, once bound, are more easily eliminated.
