Evening primrose oil is derived from evening primrose, a yellow flowering herb native to the Americas. This natural source of omega-6 fatty acids contributes to the maintenance of optimal health. The structure and function of the skin, the body's largest organ, depends on fatty acids. Linoleic acid accounts for approximately 12% of the skin's fatty acids. It is essential for maintaining the integrity of the epidermal barrier, which protects against environmental factors and the loss of electrolytes and water. In a randomized, placebo-controlled trial, daily consumption of evening primrose oil supplements for three months significantly improved skin firmness, elasticity, and barrier protection in adults with dry skin. Recent research suggests that long-term use of evening primrose oil may be necessary to improve skin health, as it takes four weeks for skin cells to regenerate and a new fatty acid balance to be achieved.
