A substantial body of evidence indicates that adequate folate intake can provide significant cellular and neural protection and an energy source. In this formula, folate is provided as Metafolin®, the natural and universally metabolized form of folate. Metafolin® is chemically identical to the active folate metabolite naturally found in foods, 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (L-5-MTHF). Clinical evidence indicates that the bioavailability of Metafolin® is superior to that of folic acid. Adequate folate levels are important for red blood cell formation and protein metabolism. At the molecular level, folate's primary function is to donate methyl groups in key biochemical reactions. Specifically, this B vitamin is essential for proper neural and cellular development of the fetal central nervous system. Research shows that taking a daily supplement containing at least 400 mcg of folate before and during early pregnancy helps reduce the risk of neural tube defects.
