Vitamin D improves the absorption of calcium and phosphorus and promotes good bone health. Osteoporosis Canada guidelines recommend a daily intake of 400 to 1,000 IU of vitamin D for low-risk adults under 50 years of age and 800 to 2,000 IU for older adults at high risk. An intake of 700 to 800 IU of vitamin D per day is associated with a lower incidence of fractures compared to an intake of 400 IU per day.
