Vitamin E, a peroxyl radical scavenger, is the main fat-soluble component of the cellular antioxidant defense system and is obtained exclusively from food. Plants synthesize eight forms of vitamin E from homogentisic acid: the alpha, beta, gamma, and delta classes of tocopherol and tocotrienol. Although each of these molecules is a peroxyl radical scavenger, the human body appears to have a particular affinity for alpha-tocopherol.

Vitamin E, in general, has been shown to have potential benefits for cardiovascular health and its role in the development of various types of cancer.
