A double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in 214 adults with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) showed that a 4-week treatment with L. Plantarum 299v significantly reduced the mean frequency of digestive symptoms by 51.9% and the mean symptom severity by 45.2% in 78.1% of patients, resulting in a treatment efficacy rating of good or excellent, compared to 81% in the placebo group. Similarly, a randomized controlled trial in 123 adults with IBS found that a 6-week treatment with L. rhamnosus GG reduced the mean IBS symptom severity score by 76%, which was statistically significant compared to the control group.
