Betaine HCl and pepsin are natural components of gastric juice that enable the assimilation and biological activity of nutrients. Betaine HCl is an acid form of betaine that promotes optimal acidity in the gastric lumen; pepsin is an enzyme that digests proteins and catalyzes the dissociation of peptide bonds. Both promote the solubilization of food particles and the healthy assimilation and utilization of nutrients, including protein, vitamin B12, and iron. Contact with gastric juices leads to the breakdown of proteins and polysaccharides, making them more susceptible to the actions of hydrolytic enzymes in the duodenum and jejunum. With age, as gastric acid secretion decreases, betaine can help replace endogenous gastric acid production and help promote optimal digestion.
