A combined formula of 5-hydroxytryptophan and vitamin B6
5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is a precursor in the biosynthesis of serotonin. It is synthesized from L-tryptophan, an essential amino acid found naturally in dietary proteins such as turkey and milk, and requires vitamin B6 as a cofactor. 5-HTP is produced primarily by enterochromaffin cells in the gastrointestinal tract and by the raphe nuclei of the brainstem, where it is subsequently converted to serotonin. Serotonin produced in the gastrointestinal tract stimulates physiological functions including vasoconstriction, uterine contraction, bronchoconstriction, gastrointestinal motility, and platelet aggregation. At the brain level, serotonin inhibits excitatory neurotransmission and modulates wakefulness, attention, psychological attitude (anxiety and depression), sexual behavior, appetite, thermoregulation, motor skills, migraines, vomiting, nociception, and aggression.
Adults: Take 1 capsule three times daily or as directed by your healthcare professional. To minimize the risk of gastrointestinal upset, start at 50–100 mg, 2 to 3 times daily and gradually increase to the effective dose over a 2-week period. Take with food. For fibromyalgia symptoms, use for at least 2 weeks to see beneficial effects. Consult a healthcare professional for use beyond 1 year.
